“fine-tuning” their social skills.

SIBLING SPOTLIGHT
Here’s a chance for siblings to shine! Family support and understanding is an essential ingredient in overcoming challenges for the children with special needs.
However, siblings can feel lost in the shuffle and undervalued. We want to give siblings their due by providing them with their own chance to grab the spotlight!
Siblings will engage in energizing activities including art, gym time, music, and games. They will have lunch together, and an opportunity to share their feelings
and have them validated by other children with similar family situations. Min/Max: 3/6
Ages 4 to 7  Day: Friday: 11:00-12:00

Facilitated by Speech Pathologists
Specially designed programs that use reading and creativity to bridge the connection between language development and literacy proficiency.
“Spoken language provides the foundation for the development of reading and writing. In fact, spoken and written language share a reciprocal relationship, building
on each other to result in general language and literacy competency. Children who have problems with spoken language frequently experience difficulties learning to
read and write, and children with reading and writing problems often experience difficulties using language to communicate, think and learn. Similarly, instruction in
spoken language often results in growth in written language.” – ASHA
“Read with Me” Parents and Tots Workshop
Well before a child learns to read, his/her brain begins laying down the building blocks of language necessary for both speaking and reading. The stronger the foundation,
the more solid the progress from language to literacy. This group is designed to help parents use reading with their toddlers to build a foundation for language
development and pre-literacy skills. In addition to learning the basics of “book handling” with your tot, our therapists will share creative and fun strategies to
encourage little ones in developing both spoken language and listening skills.
Wednesday: 9:00-10:00
“Book Buddies" (Reading Readiness)
Therapists use books and poems based on weekly themes to practice pre-reading skills for preschool aged children. Specifically targeted skills include phonological
awareness, vocabulary development, description skills, understanding and use of simple “wh” questions, and print awareness.
Ages 3 to 4  Wednesday: 10:30-11:30
“Book Worms” (Building Early Reading Skills)
This group targets the early reader through interactive and shared book-reading activities. The children will not only participate in ongoing phonological awareness
activities, but also practice sound-letter association through use of word-families, and other skills like prediction and sequencing skills, understanding and use of
“why, when, and how” questions, basic categorization, description skills, and vocabulary development.
Ages 5 to 6  Thursday: 12:30-1:30
“Book Club” (Reading to Learn)
The 7’s and 8’s group is where our therapists begin to put more of an emphasis on reading to learn by helping your child become “active readers”. The therapist will
target active reading skills such as: predicting and inferring, identifying the “main idea,” reading comprehension techniques to keep track of the “who, what, where and
when,” and summarization skills.
Ages 7 to 8  Thursday: 2:00-3:00
